CAGJ-URGENT ACTION for food justice this weekend

Posted by LocaVori on November 21, 2009

King County / Seattle residents, please help support food justice locally

I am very concerned to hear today that the budget for WSU Extension has been cut out of the County budget. This is particularly troublesome since they just received a sizable grant - $1.2 million - from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, to implement the Community Action Plan, that they will be unable to use if they are cut.

Seattle Community Meeting & People's Summit

Posted by LocaVori on November 1, 2009

Last week I attended the community meeting of the Community Alliance for Global Justice (CAGJ) in Seattle. The evening included great food, provocative conversation, and a report back from Community Food Security Coalition's 13th Annual Conference, From Commodity to Community: Food Politics and Projects in the Heartland. The meeting was held at the New Hope Baptist Church in the central district and featured an Ethiopian veggie feast from Mesob restaurant. Being one who can never turn down Ethiopian food (it was excellent) I attended and met some really cool people and learned a lot.

Food Summit

Posted by LocaVori on October 23, 2009

On Wednesday, October 21, 2009, Town Hall Seattle hosted the Food Summit, "Good Clean Fair Food - Can We Have It All?". This was the first time in Seattle that a forum focused on food justice and worker rights along with issues surrounding local, organic, and sustainable foods. Produced in collaboration with Slow Food Seattle, the summit was nearly seven months in planning. Proceeds went to the benefit of the Laurel Rubin Farm Worker Justice Project.

King bolete - natural, fresh, organic!

Even if food is local, sustainable, organic, you really can't feel good about it without food justice. The food summit explored this thought and more.

Seattle Weekly Market - Meadowbrook

Posted by LocaVori on October 7, 2009

Sunday mornings during the summer season in Seattle, hidden away between Lake City and Maple Leaf neighborhoods, the intrepid explorer will find the Meadowbrook Farmers Market. Meadowbrook is one of the smaller farmers markets operating in the city, less well known than its bigger cousins but just as fun and with all the variety. Meadowbook Farmers Market is a member of Sustainable NE Seattle and the WSFMA.

Sustainable agriculture had a great week as we get set to bid adieu to Summer, 2009. The USDA, Eastern Europe, Providence, Rhode Island, NYC, the state of Ohio, the investments sector, and the Heinz Family Foundation all made strides towards helping promote sustainability in agriculture.

The LAST Challenge

Posted by LocaVori on September 14, 2009

While the First Lady of the United States was applying for a new fresh market near the White House and her husband was being heckled by southern congressmen bent on obstructing health care for millions, tens of astroturfing teabaggers descended on a remote corner of the Washington Mall. Thank goodness for local food!

In Praise of Heirlooms

Posted by LocaVori on September 11, 2009

When people hear the word heirlooms they usually think of tomatoes. But heirlooms really refers to the old fashioned vegetable varieties - of all species - that is the genetic heritage of human agriculture. There's heirloom herbs, squash, greens, corn and cucumber, onions, leeks and more cabbages than you can count. There's been a lot to contribute to the recent interest in heirlooms, mostly tomatoes of course, some of it good and some of it not so good.

Fall sure is in the air here in Seattle. It's starting to rain again and I'm worried about the tomatoes, but fortunately it looks like we might get a couple more weeks of warm weather. Harvest season is upon is and this year people are thinking up great new ways to share the bounty!

No Tillage in the Palouse

Posted by LocaVori on July 4, 2009

As the 2009 climate bill works its way through congress an old blood feud arises in the liberal blogosphere: is no-tillage agriculture a good thing? Bloggers and pundits are aligning to fight against carbon offsets for agriculture, claiming that the practice sequesters no carbon. To hear many progressive bloggers of late tell the story, no-tillage agriculture is the devil himself.
